Health Ministry reinforces commitment to fighting addiction with new initiatives
Kuwait’s Ministry of Health reaffirms its focus on rehabilitation with the expansion of addiction treatment facilities.

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 22:  The Ministry of Health (MoH) reaffirmed its dedication to combating addiction in Kuwait by partnering with various ministries, institutions, and relevant organizations. They aim to effectively address, treat, and rehabilitate addicts, helping them reintegrate into society as active and contributing members.

Dr. Munther Al-Hasawi, Assistant Undersecretary for Public Health, emphasized the Ministry's commitment in a statement to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) following the (I Can) II Marathon, organized by the Addiction Treatment Center at the MoH. The event, which was held under the patronage of Health Minister Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi, showcased the Ministry's significant efforts in addiction treatment, highlighting global advancements in medical care and therapy.

Dr. Al-Hasawi commended the Addiction Treatment Center for its pivotal role in tackling addiction, stating that their collective efforts serve to promote a healthy lifestyle. He explained that physical exercise is much more than a means of staying fit — it is an essential investment in the well-being of individuals and communities.

“Scientific evidence has proven a strong connection between physical activity and improved mental health,” Dr. Al-Hasawi remarked. “Sports reduce rates of depression, anxiety, and stress, enhance sleep quality, and increase a sense of belonging within society. Moreover, regular physical activity reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes, diabetes, obesity, and strengthens the immune system.”

Dr. Al-Hasawi further emphasized that the Ministry of Health is committed to supporting events that promote physical activity and health, given the clear link between exercise and both physical and mental wellness. Additionally, he highlighted the opening of a new addiction treatment center with a bed capacity of approximately 304 beds, which brings the total number of available beds across the Ministry's treatment centers to 500.

Dr. Hussein Al-Shatti, Director of the Addiction Treatment Center, explained to KUNA that the sports marathon was an example of "community participation" in the addiction recovery process. He emphasized that addiction treatment is not confined to hospital settings but must involve active participation from society.

“Physical activity plays a crucial role in enhancing physical fitness and strengthening the immune system, aiding in recovery from the effects of drug use,” Dr. Al-Shatti said. “It also stimulates the release of endorphins—hormones that help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are common during recovery.”

Dr. Al-Shatti stressed that addiction treatment is a shared responsibility of the entire community, not just the individual. He called for reducing the stigma associated with addiction, reinforcing the message that addicts are not criminals, but individuals in need of support and treatment.

Colonel Ahmad Shukri from the Moral Guidance Directorate of the National Guard also spoke to KUNA, highlighting the importance of the National Guard’s involvement in these types of events. He explained that the National Guard’s participation, along with other Guard directorates, reflects the institution’s commitment to social responsibility, community development, and social stability.

“The National Guard has various collaboration protocols with ministries and organizations at the state level,” Colonel Shukri added. “We remain dedicated to implementing these agreements and engaging in initiatives like this marathon to support the well-being of the community.”

The event underlined the joint efforts of the Ministry of Health, the National Guard, and other organizations in tackling addiction and promoting healthy living across the country.
