TOKYO, Jul 9: Japan issued a heatstroke warning on Tuesday for Tokyo and surrounding regions due to hot and humid conditions that have caused several recent deaths and led to the use of new "cooling shelters" in the capital.
Authorities advised residents to avoid physical activity as the environment ministry issued top 'danger'-level alerts. Media reports indicated that many people were hospitalized, with some fatalities due to heatstroke in the past few days.
These cooling shelters, usually community centers or libraries equipped with air conditioning, are part of a new initiative requiring local governments to provide relief from the heat following official warnings.
