NEW YORK, Nov 27, (Agencies): In the pursuit of enhanced well-being, many turn to supplements, an expansive market offering solutions to a range of health concerns. From promising better sleep to aiding in weight management, the options seem limitless. However, caution is paramount as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate supplements, leaving consumers susceptible to potentially hazardous choices.
To shed light on some of the most perilous supplements, we consulted health experts including Ramit Singh Sambyal, Dr. Shara Cohen, and registered dietitian Jesse Feder, RDN, CPT. They highlighted three supplements—ephedra, beta-carotene, and kava—as particularly risky for health.
1. Ephedra
Dr. Sambyal cautions individuals concerned about blood pressure, heart rate, or cardiovascular health to avoid supplements containing ephedra. This stimulant has the potential to increase blood pressure, heart rate, and metabolism, posing a significant risk when combined with certain medications. Despite being banned by the FDA in 2004 due to links to heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and fatalities, Dr. Sambyal warns that ephedra or its derivatives may still be present in some products.
2. Beta-Carotene
Beta-carotene, commonly found in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, is praised for potential health benefits such as improved vision and a stronger immune system. However, Dr. Cohen points out a higher risk of lung cancer in specific populations, particularly smokers, based on the Beta-Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial (CARET). While beta-carotene from food sources is generally safe, Dr. Cohen advises caution with high-dose supplements, especially in groups with a high risk of lung cancer.
3. Kava
Feder discusses kava, a supplement known for its stress-relieving properties. While it may offer a sense of calm, regular consumption has been linked to liver and kidney damage. Feder emphasizes that kava can affect enzyme and antioxidant activity in the liver, potentially leading to liver damage. Additionally, it may decrease blood flow to the kidneys, causing an increase in harmful metabolites that can damage them. Individuals with kidney and liver issues are advised to err on the side of caution and avoid kava.
In conclusion, while supplements can enhance one's wellness routine, it is crucial to conduct thorough research and be aware of potential risks. Understanding how supplements may interact with medications and impact pre-existing health conditions is vital.
