His Highness the Amir honors winners of the KFAS Awards for 2022 and 2023
His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah honors the winners of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences Awards for the years 2022 and 2023

KUWAIT CITY, Dec 11: Under the patronage and in the presence of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the winners of the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) Awards for 2022 and 2023 were honored on Wednesday. The ceremony recognized laureates of the Jaber Al-Ahmad Award for Young Researchers, the Kuwait Award, and the Al-Sumait Prize for African Development.

Jaber Al-Ahmad Award for Young Researchers (2022)

The 2022 winners are:

Dr. Muhammad Haidar Jamal: Honored in Medical and Medical Sciences. An associate professor in the Department of Surgery at Kuwait University, Dr. Jamal holds Canadian and American Board certifications in surgery.

Dr. Dhari Adel Al-Huwail: Recognized in Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Dr. Al-Huwail is an associate professor in the Department of Information Sciences at Kuwait University and holds a Ph.D. in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland, USA.

Dr. Yousef Yaqoub Al-Asiri: Awarded in Engineering Sciences. A researcher in the Coastal Management Program at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Dr. Al-Asiri earned his Ph.D. in Water Engineering from Cardiff University, UK.

Dr. Abdullah Rashid Al-Shabli: Honored in Social and Human Sciences. An associate professor at the Saad Al-Abdullah Academy for Security Sciences, Dr. Al-Shabli holds a Ph.D. in Economic Laws and Corporate Governance from the University of Leeds, UK.

Dr. Abdullah Jawad Sultan: Recognized in Administrative and Economic Sciences. Dr. Sultan is an associate professor in the Marketing Department at Kuwait University, with a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Washington, USA.

Jaber Al-Ahmad Award for Young Researchers (2023)

The 2023 winners include:

Dr. Zaid Essam Al-Marzouq: Honored in Medical and Allied Medical Sciences. A cardiologist specializing in arterial catheterization and structural diseases at Mass General Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Al-Marzouq also conducts research at the Smith Center for Clinical Research.

Dr. Fatima Salem Al-Rashed: Recognized in Biological Sciences. A researcher at the Dasman Diabetes Institute, Dr. Al-Rashed holds a Ph.D. from the University of Nottingham, UK, and received the L'Oréal UNESCO Award for Women in Science in 2017.

Dr. Ammar Muhammad Bahman: Awarded in Engineering Sciences. A professor in Kuwait University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Bahman earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, USA.

Dr. Amal Abdul Wahab Al-Saleh: Joint winner in Social and Human Sciences. A professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Planning at Kuwait University, Dr. Al-Saleh holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Leadership from Pennsylvania State University, USA.

Dr. Fahd Ali Al-Zumai: Joint winner in Social and Human Sciences. An associate professor in the Faculty of Law at Kuwait University, Dr. Al-Zumai obtained his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.

The Jaber Al-Ahmad Award for Young Researchers, established in 1988, honors young Kuwaiti researchers with doctoral degrees for their scientific contributions.

Kuwait Award (2022)

The 2022 winners are:

Dr. Fawzan Sami Al-Kurai (Saudi Arabia): Awarded in Basic Medical Sciences, he is a professor of human genetics at Al-Faisal University and Head of Applied Genomics at King Faisal Specialist Hospital.

Dr. Khalil bin Al-Hajj Amin (Morocco): Recognized in Applied Sciences, he leads the Battery Technology Team at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA.

Dr. Elie Tamer (Lebanon): Honored in Economic and Social Sciences. Dr. Tamer holds the Louis Berkman Chair at Harvard University.

Dr. Said Abdelkader Yaktine (Morocco): Recognized in Humanities, Arts, and Literature, he is a professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat.

Dr. Mohamed El Hadi Omar El-Matousi (Tunisia): Awarded in Emerging Specialized Sciences, he is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Florida, USA.

Kuwait Award (2023)

The 2023 winners are:

Dr. Nashat Nassar (Palestine) and

Dr. Mohamed Al-Daoudi (Morocco): Joint winners in Basic Sciences. Dr. Nassar is a professor at the University of Calgary, Canada, and Dr. Al-Daoudi is the Director of Advanced Membranes Research at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Morsi Sultan (Egypt): Recognized in Applied Sciences, he is a professor at Western Michigan University, USA.

Dr. Dina Ghazi Al-Qatabi (Syria): Awarded in Emerging Specialized Sciences, she is a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.

The Kuwait Award, established in 1979, aims to encourage Arab researchers by recognizing excellence in various scientific fields.

Al-Sumait Prize for African Development

The 2022 prize in Food Security was awarded jointly to:

African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), led by Dr. Osman Badian, for its work in enhancing agricultural technologies for African farmers.

Dr. Catherine Nakalembe (Uganda), an expert in crop mapping using remote sensing and machine learning.

The 2023 prize in Education was awarded to Camfed, an organization focused on advancing female education in Africa.

Launched in 2013, the Al-Sumait Prize honors the legacy of Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti physician dedicated to addressing Africa's challenges in health, education, and food security.

KFAS, established in 1976, continues to support scientific research and innovation in Kuwait.
