KUALA LUMPUR, July 22: Kuwaiti karateka Mohammad Hussein won the silver medal in the Asian Karate Federation (AFK) Senior Championships, held in Malaysia. According to AFK on Saturday, Hussein competed against a Japanese karateka in the solo Kata category, adding that the Japanese opponent won the gold medal by a 3.42 to 2.42 while,Omar Al- Qenai also claimed a bronze medal, in the under 75-kg weight. Speaking to KUNA, head of Kuwait Karate Federation Ahmad Al-Thufairi said today’s bronze of Al-Qenai and silver of Hussein are the first achievement of Kuwait’s national team in this event. Hussein was in good shape, so he could obtain the second position in the individual’s contest, he said.

He noted that the Kuwaiti national team participated in the “kumite” competitions, individual combat, with Noah Daoud, under 55kg weight, Abdullah Shaaban, under 60kg weight, Mohammad Al-Otaibi, under 67kg weight, Youssef Hajia, under 84kg weight and Mohammad Al-Majadi, over 84 kg. Al-Thufairi hoped that Kuwait’s players would gain more medals at the event, which comes to a close on Sunday, tomorrow. He commended efforts of Kuwait’s Ambassador to Malaysia Rashed Al- Saleh, who congratulated Al-Qenai and Hussein for their medals, saying they raised Kuwait’s flag. The tourney is featuring more than 4000 male and female athletes from 31 countries.(KUNA)
