NEW YORK, April 23: Meta’s Instagram has officially released Edits, a new video editing app aimed at content creators looking to publish across multiple platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. The app is part of Instagram’s broader strategy to draw users away from TikTok, particularly as regulatory pressure on the Chinese-owned platform continues to grow in the U.S.
Unveiled on Tuesday, Edits offers creators an all-in-one platform to produce and enhance videos with features like background replacement, AI-generated visuals, captioning, and direct uploads to Meta platforms. The app also turns photos into videos using artificial intelligence and includes project organization tools, an idea management hub, and an inspiration feed offering insights on trending content.
Instagram initially hinted at the app’s development in January, shortly after TikTok faced temporary service disruptions and the U.S. government moved forward with a potential ban citing national security concerns. One of TikTok’s sister apps, CapCut—a widely used editing tool also owned by ByteDance—was removed from the App Store around the same time and has yet to return. Edits is positioned as a free, accessible alternative.
To complement the launch, Instagram has rolled out additional creator incentives in recent months. These include high-value exclusivity deals for influencers and bonus programs that reward frequent content posting on Instagram and Facebook.
Developed in close collaboration with digital creators, Edits emphasizes ease of use and performance. Instagram says the app is tailored to meet the evolving demands of online video production. Future updates are expected to include advanced editing tools such as keyframe support, collaboration features, and a broader selection of voice effects, fonts, and filters.
