TEHRAN, Sep 2:  Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said Wednesday that it carried out missile and drone attacks against US military bases in Erbil in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region in retaliation for overnight US strikes on Iran.

The IRGC claimed that the attacks targeted US military facilities in Erbil, causing damage to several installations and pieces of military equipment.

According to the IRGC, a maintenance center and storage facilities for technical equipment were destroyed, while the guidance system of an American surveillance balloon inside the base was also hit.

The Iranian force further claimed that fuel storage facilities at the base caught fire and that several US soldiers were killed. The claims have not been independently verified.

The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM) said late Tuesday that it had launched strikes against targets belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Following the US announcement, Iranian media reported explosions on Qeshm Island and in Bandar Abbas, Sirik, Chabahar and Konarak.
