A historic Rolex Day-Date once owned by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser is set to be auctioned by Sotheby’s on December 6, 2024, as part of their Important Watches Auction in New York. This watch, a gift from Nasser's successor, Anwar El Sadat, is being offered by Nasser’s family for the first time. Valued at $30,000 to $60,000, the timepiece holds significant sentimental and historical importance, as Nasser was known for his simple lifestyle and rarely kept personal luxuries.
The Rolex, inscribed with “Mr. Anwar El Sadat 26-9-1963,” is symbolic of the friendship between Nasser and Sadat, both pivotal figures in modern Arab history. The watch, which Nasser kept as a personal memento, remains one of the few personal items that were retained by his family, with most other possessions donated to Cairo's Jamal Abdel Nasser Museum. Sotheby’s highlights this sale as a unique opportunity to own a piece of history associated with a leader known for his role in shaping post-colonial Egypt.
