LOS ANGELES, Dec 10: Jamie Foxx has revealed that he suffered a stroke caused by a brain bleed.
The Django Unchained actor was hospitalized in April of the previous year after experiencing a sudden "medical complication," which his family decided to keep private. Now, he has opened up about exactly what happened and shared that he lost his memory for 20 days during his challenging health scare.
In his Netflix special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was..., he explained: "On April 11, I was having a bad headache, and I asked my boy for Aspirin. I quickly realized that when you're in a medical emergency, your boys don't know what to do."
Foxx shockingly revealed, "I don't remember 20 days."
Tearfully, the 56-year-old star shared with the audience: "You don't know how good this feels" after expressing that he was "back."
The actor admitted that the exact cause of his stroke remains "a mystery," stating, "We still don't know exactly what happened to me."
After starting his sentence with "What had happened was," Jamie became emotional, and the audience applauded in support. He continued, "Your life doesn't flash before you. It was kind of oddly peaceful. I saw the tunnel, but I didn't see the light. It was hot in that tunnel."
Foxx humorously added, "Am I going to the wrong place?"
He credited his sister, Deidra, for "saving [his] life" after she "aimlessly" drove him around before taking him to Atlanta's Piedmont Hospital, where he underwent a life-saving procedure.
Explaining why his family chose to keep details of his health issue private, he said, "I was dizzy from the stroke, so my head would bob around, and my family thought everyone would make jokes about me."
Foxx vividly remembers waking up on May 4 and discovering he couldn't walk. "When I woke up, I found myself in a wheelchair. I couldn't walk," he recalled.
Initially, he struggled to accept that he had suffered a stroke. Reflecting on a conversation with his therapist, Foxx recalled being told, "You need to kill the old Jamie so the new Jamie can thrive."
The actor also shared a moment of reflection, saying, "God blessed me with money and fame, but when I forgot about God, He blessed me with a stroke."
