JAPAN, Oct 3, (Agencies): In response to a surge in bear attacks in Japan, an innovative solution has emerged: the "Monster Wolf," a robotic creature designed to deter these aggressive predators. Fueled by solar energy, the Monster Wolf aims to reduce conflicts between residents and bears by creating a terrifying presence in bear-prone areas. It accomplishes this with a repertoire of lifelike features, including glowing red eyes, menacing fangs, and convincingly fluttering fur. Emitting a range of intimidating sounds, from gunshots to a hunter's voice and a dog's bark, the Monster Wolf springs into action when sensors detect nearby humans or animals.

The only element that sets it apart from a genuine wolf is its noticeable absence of legs. Currently, Monster Wolf technology allows it to be mounted on a pole, where its swiveling neck effectively scares off bears in the vicinity. This unique design was inspired by the Japanese wolf, which once roamed the countryside over a century ago before being hunted to extinction.

Initially deployed in Takikawa around 2016, Monster Wolves have become increasingly prevalent across Japan due to a rising number of bear attacks in the country. Recent reports by Japanese news outlet NHK indicate that bear assaults have reached their highest levels since records began in 2007, with 53 injuries reported between April and July of this year alone. Tragically, one resident in Hokkaido lost their life in a bear attack in May.

Officials attribute this surge in bear activity to the bears' natural habitats lacking the essential food sources that constitute their diet, driving them into populated residential areas in search of sustenance. Takikawa reported significant success following the installation of their Monster Wolf, proudly stating that not a single bear had been spotted since its deployment. Many towns across Japan are now eagerly hoping for similar results.
