Joe Biden’s new chapter: Former president’s strategic move into Hollywood

WASHINGTON, Feb 4:  Former President Joe Biden has announced that he will be represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) in a deal for as-yet unspecified services, marking his first known post-presidency move to monetize his influence.

The announcement follows speculation about how Biden and his family might generate income after years of foreign and private engagements while Biden served as vice president.

“President Biden is one of America’s most respected and influential voices in national and global affairs,” said Richard Lovett, CAA co-chairman. “His lifelong commitment to public service is one of unity, optimism, dignity, and possibility. We are profoundly honored to partner with him again.”

CAA also represents Barack and Michelle Obama’s media company, Higher Ground, which has produced several successful projects, including the Oscar-winning documentary American Factory, and a podcast series featuring the Obamas.

Biden’s exact plans with the agency remain unclear, but he previously worked with CAA to promote his 2017 book, Promise Me, Dad, after leaving the vice presidency.

The announcement did not mention any new book project, leading to speculation that Biden may seek to reach entertainment audiences, a common post-presidency endeavor for former politicians.

While Biden’s presidential salary was $400,000 annually, he and his family have earned significantly more after his vice presidency. In 2017, just one month after leaving office, Biden was named the “Benjamin Franklin Presidential Practice Professor” at the University of Pennsylvania. He earned nearly $1 million through 2019 despite making only nine known visits to the university.

During this time, Biden was also provided with a glass-enclosed office space in Washington, D.C., which later became part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents.

In addition, Biden made substantial speaking fees after leaving office. Financial disclosures show Biden earning $190,000 for a speech at Drew University in New Jersey, $182,000 from Lake Michigan College, and similar amounts at other institutions. His wife, Jill Biden, also earned speaking fees during her time as second lady, taking $66,000 from Foothill-De Anza Community College, among others.

The Bidens routed much of their income through S-corporations to avoid Medicare taxes, which has led to political criticism, with Republican claims that the couple underreported their income to avoid paying taxes.

After Biden’s vice presidency, his family members also made lucrative deals, including business dealings with the Chinese government-linked company CEFC China Energy. CEFC reportedly paid millions of dollars for vague consulting work, although no major business opportunities ever materialized.

Testimony from former Biden family business associate Rob Walker in 2023 revealed that after a 2017 meeting between Joe Biden and CEFC Chairman Ye Jianming, the company transferred $3 million to Hunter Biden and his associates. The Chinese official later faced charges of corruption.

Biden has not disclosed his future plans, but during the final days of his presidency, he suggested that his voice would remain influential. “We’re leaving office, we’re not leaving the fight,” he told supporters upon leaving the White House in January 2021.

Biden has largely remained out of the public eye since leaving office, though he continues to post occasionally on X (formerly Twitter). "Just got off a call with Ken Martin to congratulate him on his victory,” Biden tweeted recently after Martin was elected chair of the Democratic National Committee. "I know he’ll help ensure Democrats continue to fight for working people and stand up to the abuse of power. Together, we will choose possibility over peril and empower more Americans to believe that the America of our dreams is closer than we think. We just have to keep the faith and spread it.”
