LONDON, May 28: During her recent visit to the Chelsea Flower Show in London, Dame Judi Dench hinted that her illustrious six-decade-long acting career might be nearing its end. When asked about her upcoming projects, the 89-year-old Oscar-winning actress candidly replied, "No, no. I can’t even see," as reported by Deadline.
Dench, a Tony winner, disclosed her diagnosis of advanced macular degeneration in 2012, a condition that has significantly impacted her vision over the years. Macular degeneration, or AMD, is a prevalent eye condition among older adults, leading to permanent and rapid loss of vision, according to the National Institutes of Health. A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that nearly 19.8 million Americans aged 40 and above were living with AMD in 2019.
In an interview on "The Graham Norton Show" last year, Dench acknowledged the challenges she faces in reading scripts and learning lines due to her deteriorating vision. She confessed that memorizing lines, once effortless for her, has become increasingly difficult. Despite her photographic memory, she now relies on friends to repeat lines to her repeatedly as a learning method.
Reflecting on her evolving approach to acting amidst her vision impairment, Dench expressed resilience, saying, "You find a way of just getting about and getting over the things that you find very difficult." Despite the obstacles, she continues to stay active in the film industry. Dench received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Belfast" in 2022. Additionally, she appeared in the 2022 Christmas film "Spirited" alongside Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds and starred in the comedy "Allelujah" the same year.
