Katy Perry's space journey draws criticism
Katy Perry

CALIFORNIA, April 15:  While Katy Perry's daughter watched in awe as her mother blasted into space, the family of the disabled veteran she is involved in a legal dispute with, has expressed discontent.

The 40-year-old "Firework" singer was part of Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission on Monday, April 14, which launched a crew of prominent women, including TV personality Gayle King, philanthropist Lauren Sánchez, film producer Kerianne Flynn, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and activist Amanda Nguyen.

The celebrity space mission sparked backlash, with some, including actress Olivia Munn, accusing the celebrities of being "gluttonous" for embarking on a trip to space that lasted just 11 minutes. Carl Westcott, the son of an 85-year-old disabled veteran locked in a legal battle with Perry, added to the criticism.

Westcott’s father, Carl Westcott, has been in a legal dispute with Perry since 2020, when he sold his $15 million mansion to her. The veteran, who suffers from Huntington’s disease, later sought to back out of the sale, claiming he was under the influence of painkillers during the deal.

Their legal battle has been ongoing, with Perry countersuing Carl, claiming he owes her millions for damages due to the inability to rent the property during the dispute. In November 2023, a Los Angeles judge ruled in Perry’s favor, confirming she was the rightful owner of the mansion. However, Carl’s legal battle with Perry continues, with their next court date set for August 21.

Carl’s son, Chart Westcott, expressed frustration with Perry’s space journey in an exclusive statement to The Post. He questioned whether her experience in space would make her more compassionate toward disabled veterans like his father.

"Katy Perry says she felt ‘super connected to love’ after her trip to space. I can’t help but wonder if her experience will make her more compassionate to elderly disabled veterans like my father,” Chart Westcott said. "I am glad she made it back safe and look forward to having her testify in August and be held accountable for her actions against my family.”

The trial, initially set for February, was postponed due to Carl’s health and will now take place in August.

Despite the legal battle, Perry's space adventure was a highlight for her family. Her 4-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom Perry shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom, was seen in the crowd, donning an astronaut outfit and shouting “Mama!” as the rocket launched into space.

In a heartfelt moment, Perry revealed that she brought a flower—named after her daughter—aboard the spacecraft, symbolizing her connection to Daisy. After the mission, she spoke to reporters about the experience, expressing how it felt like "second to being a mom."

“This experience is second to being a mom,” Perry shared. “That’s why it was hard for me to go because that’s all my love right there, and I have to surrender and trust that the universe is going to take care of me and protect me and also my family and daughter.”

She further expressed that she wanted to model courage, worthiness, and fearlessness for her daughter, Daisy.

Perry, along with the other celebrity crew members, wore space suits with personalized designs reflecting their careers. Perry’s suit featured a firework design, a nod to her hit song, while Gayle King wore a microphone, representing her role as a news anchor, and Sánchez sported a fly design in reference to her children's book. Bloom, who joined Perry's daughter at the launch site in West Texas, wasn’t the only notable figure in attendance. Oprah Winfrey, King’s best friend, was also there, breaking into tears as the rocket made its way into space.
