Kate Middleton

LONDON, April 25: In a historic move, King Charles III has bestowed a significant honor upon his daughter-in-law, Kate Middleton, by appointing her a Royal Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour. The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks Middleton as the first member of the royal family to receive this prestigious title.

The Order of the Companions of Honour, established by King George V in 1917, is renowned for recognizing exceptional achievements in art, science, medicine, and public service. Middleton's appointment to this distinguished order underscores her contributions and dedication to various charitable causes and public endeavors.

With only 65 members currently, including notable figures like Elton John, Paul McCartney, and J.K. Rowling, the Order of the Companions of Honour stands as one of the most esteemed royal appointments. Buckingham Palace revealed the new list of honors on Tuesday, coinciding with St. George's Day in the U.K.

During the same ceremony at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle, King Charles III also appointed his eldest son, Prince William, as Great Master of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath. This appointment continues a longstanding tradition within the royal family, with Charles himself having held the same order during his tenure as the Prince of Wales.

Additionally, Queen Camilla, the king's wife, was appointed as Grand Master and First or Principal Dame Grand Cross of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, succeeding her late father-in-law, Prince Philip.

Middleton's elevation to Princess of Wales and her latest royal title symbolizes a gesture of support from King Charles III, particularly as both monarch and princess confront their respective battles with cancer. The close relationship between the king and Middleton has been evident through their public interactions and shared interests, further strengthened by their mutual struggle with illness.

Author Sally Bedell Smith notes the bond between the king and princess, highlighting Middleton's appreciation for art and culture, which resonates with Charles. Their shared experiences with cancer serve as a unifying force, offering comfort and solidarity during challenging times.

King Charles III's own diagnosis of cancer, announced in February, and Middleton's revelation of undergoing preventative chemotherapy treatment in March further underscore the significance of their shared journey and the support they find in each other amidst their health challenges.
