KOC makes significant strides in long-term energy goals hunt

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 6: Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has made significant strides in its journey toward achieving its long-term energy goals, particularly the target of reaching 17 gigawatts of power by 2050. One of the major initiatives under this vision is enhancing energy efficiency, with KOC completing a comprehensive energy audit and developing a roadmap earlier this year, in February. This effort is part of the company’s broader energy transformation plan, which focuses on sustainable practices and reducing operational costs.

An informed source from KOC revealed that a detailed report, following the audit, outlines the scope of work, key findings, and recommendations for improving energy use. The report highlights quick and cost-effective solutions aimed at optimizing energy consumption and cutting down on operational expenses.

These efforts are aligned with KOC’s goal of adopting a comprehensive approach to improving energy efficiency across its various assets, including energy consumption assessments and data analysis. As part of the company’s energy transformation strategy, KOC has also initiated a technical feasibility study to form a renewable energy portfolio. This study, conducted with the help of a technical consultant, aims to evaluate the practicality of integrating renewable energy technologies such as wind and photovoltaic (solar) energy.

The ultimate goal is to generate one gigawatt of clean energy, contributing to KOC’s own electricity needs while advancing Kuwait’s broader energy diversification agenda. In addition to energy initiatives, KOC has made notable progress in environmental rehabilitation, particularly in northern Kuwait’s Sabriya oil field. The company has successfully removed nearly 7 million square meters of unexploded ordnance and contaminated soil, remnants of the Gulf War in 1990.

Over the past year, more than one million tons of contaminated soil have been treated and rehabilitated. This cleanup operation has freed up land for further development and enhanced the quality of the Kuwaiti environment, underscoring KOC’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. These efforts refl ect Kuwait Oil Company’s ongoing dedication to both energy transformation and environmental stewardship, as it prepares for a more sustainable and resilient future in line with the nation’s long-term goals.
