KUWAIT CITY, March 30, (KUNA): Mishal Flaiteh, Secretary General of the Kuwait Winter Games Club (WGC), affirmed the club's commitment to preparing national skiers for the forthcoming Winter Olympic Games (Milano-Cortina 2026) in Milan. This preparation involves engaging them in rigorous international competitions under the auspices of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS).
Flaiteh disclosed to KUNA on Friday that athlete Faris Al-Obaid is presently competing in the International Winter Sports Championship hosted by the Hellenic Athletics Federation at the Parnassus resort. This event provides a crucial opportunity for Al-Obaid to accumulate points for Winter Olympic qualification.
He noted that Al-Obaid underwent comprehensive training in France, Switzerland, and Austria in preparation for the championship. Flaiteh expressed optimism for Al-Obaid and his teammate Abdulrahman Al-Wahaibi, who showcased commendable performances in recent tournaments in Switzerland and France, to sustain their momentum in upcoming competitions.
In a conversation with KUNA, Al-Obaid expressed his contentment with participating in his second championship of the season. His ambition is to become the first Kuwaiti skier to qualify for the Winter Olympics. He acknowledged the continuous support of the club in his training and participation in major tournaments.
Skiing is an expensive sport due to equipment costs and the necessity of training in snowy regions. Skiers often spend prolonged periods abroad to hone their skills. Despite these challenges, Al-Obaid emphasized the determination of Kuwaiti youth to excel in the sport.
He reiterated his commitment to leaving no stone unturned in achieving his goal, underscoring the need for increased support and sponsorship for Kuwaiti players in this demanding sport. Such backing would facilitate their skill development, enhancing their prospects for success and accomplishment.
