KUWAIT CITY, Sept 5: On Wednesday, September 4, Kuwait and the United Kingdom unveiled a new joint funding initiative aimed at supporting UNICEF’s efforts to provide essential aid to approximately 2.5 million individuals in Gaza and Yemen, says a press release issued by the British Embassy in Kuwait. This significant contribution will see both nations providing $6 million in total -- $3 million each -- to UNICEF.

The funding will focus on restoring water and sanitation systems in Gaza and supporting primary healthcare services in Yemen. Deputy Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This year marks a crucial milestone as Kuwait and the United Kingdom celebrate 125 years of partnership.

Kuwait is proud of its deep and historical ties with the UK and remains committed to enhancing our cooperation in all areas.” Sheikh Jarrah also noted the excitement of witnessing the launch of the Kuwait Cultural Week in London and the successful convening of the 21st session of the Joint Steering Group (JSG). He emphasized that the recently signed Action Plan will further advance cooperation between the two nations in several key areas.

Minister for the Middle East, Hamish Falconer, emphasized the urgent need for aid in conflict-affected regions, saying, “The ongoing conflict has worsened the humanitarian crises in Gaza and Yemen. The joint funding from the UK and Kuwait demonstrates our shared commitment to addressing these crises and providing life-saving assistance.” UNICEF Representative in the Gulf, Eltayeb Adam, expressed gratitude for the generous contributions, stating,

“The funding from the UK and Kuwait is more than just financial support; it is a beacon of hope for communities devastated by conflict. “Together, we can ensure that essential services such as water, sanitation, and healthcare reach those in dire need, restoring dignity and normalcy to many lives,” he said. During the 21st UK-Kuwait Joint Steering Group meeting, co-chaired by Sheikh Jarrah and Minister Falconer, two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed. These agreements detail the joint funding for UNICEF’s projects in Gaza and Yemen.

Additionally, an MoU was signed outlining planned UK support for the Kuwait Civil Service Commission in delivering training programs to Kuwaiti government employees. An “Action Plan” was also established to guide future cooperation on defense, security, international development, and humanitarian efforts over the coming months.
