Kuwait Confirms Strong Food Reserves Amid Global Turmoil

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 25: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) announced on Wednesday that local bakery production capacity exceeds the total demand of all residents in the country. The ministry assured that existing bakeries are equipped with electric generators and storage silos, enabling them to operate independently for an extended period without external supplies. This statement was made by the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Ziad Al-Najem, to the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) following a meeting of the committee overseeing the implementation of the National Food Security Strategy. The meeting focused on assessing the readiness of food security emergency plans in response to regional and global developments.

Al-Najem emphasized the preparedness of relevant authorities and measures taken to safeguard the country’s strategic food stock throughout September. He reassured citizens and residents that the stock of essential food commodities is available and at optimal levels. He highlighted that the committee confirmed the safety and sufficiency of basic commodities, including rice, sugar, baby milk, powdered milk, liquid milk, corn oil, frozen chicken, wheat, corn, barley, and crude oil. The committee reviewed the emergency plan for September and evaluated the storage capacity of Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company and its subsidiaries.

Al-Najem noted that the company has successfully doubled its storage capacity and increased its strategic stock of food supplies, ensuring a surplus sufficient for an additional two months beyond private sector reserves. He also mentioned that additional batches of food supplies are expected to arrive soon. On another note, Al-Najem stated that the committee discussed precautionary measures for exceptional situations, such as setting fixed prices for certain consumer goods, regulating sales in central markets, and preventing the export of all food materials and commodities. He affirmed the readiness of emergency teams to monitor the prices of goods and supply centers, and noted ongoing coordination with the Kuwait Supply Company warehouses and food distribution branches to ensure a smooth supply flow across all 92 branches. The committee meeting was held in response to recent regional events, political crises, and military escalations, following directives from the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Khalifa Al- Ajil.
