ROME, Italy, Feb 15: Kuwait participated in the 48th meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in Rome, highlighting its ongoing dedication to rural development and agricultural sustainability. The Kuwaiti delegation was led by Minister of Finance and Minister of State for Economic Affairs and Investment, Noura Al-Fassam, accompanied by Ambassador to Italy, Nasser Al-Qahtani, and Waleed Al-Bahar, Acting Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development.

The meeting featured several high-profile figures, including His Majesty King Lesotho III, President Julius Maada Woni Bio of Sierra Leone, and Dr. Mohammed Al-Jasser, President of the Islamic Bank. The discussions emphasized the vital role of IFAD in transforming rural communities and advancing agricultural methods, reaffirming its importance as a UN-affiliated international financial institution working to support rural development.

In her opening remarks, Minister Al-Fassam conveyed the greetings and message of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad, stressing IFAD's significant role in empowering rural populations and advancing agricultural development. She highlighted that Kuwait, as a founding member of IFAD, aligns its vision with the Fund's efforts to achieve equitable growth and food security.

Al-Fassam also called for immediate global action to address food insecurity, pointing out that over 750 million people worldwide suffer from hunger. She emphasized that nations now more than ever need IFAD's leadership and support in tackling these pressing challenges.

The Minister further explained that food security and sustainable agriculture are top priorities for Kuwait. She outlined Kuwait’s support for IFAD through joint financing agreements, such as one signed at the 16th Conference of the Parties in Riyadh. Al-Fassam also highlighted Kuwait's commitment to addressing local challenges such as water management, agricultural innovation, and climate change.

"Kuwait is not only a donor country and strategic partner but also a thought leader in agricultural development," she stated, emphasizing Kuwait's role in setting international standards for global cooperation in addressing poverty and hunger. The Minister concluded by reaffirming Kuwait’s commitment to international partnerships and the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly eliminating hunger and ensuring food security for all.
