Kuwait Expats Misled by Fake WhatsApp Message on Driving License Validity

KUWAIT CITY, April 18: The validity period for driving license renewals in Kuwait has been set at 15 years for Kuwaiti citizens and 5 years for expatriates. Recently, misinformation has been circulating on social media platforms, particularly WhatsApp, claiming: “If your driving license is expiring within six months, renew it today via the Sahel app to receive a five-year validity. From tomorrow, the validity will be based solely on your residency status—so act today. This claim is false.

The Ministry of Interior has not announced any changes to the renewal period for expatriate driving licenses since the implementation of the new regulations on March 23, 2025.

Additionally, beginning April 22, 2025, a new traffic law has been enforced stating that operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, with a license not appropriate for the vehicle type, or with a revoked or suspended license will result in a fine of KD 75. Upon referral to the court, violators may face up to three months in prison and a fine ranging from KD 150 to KD 300, or both penalties.
