KUWAIT CITY, Oct 29: British Ambassador to Kuwait Qudsi Rasheed has praised the role of traditional and digital media in strengthening public understanding, highlighting the longstanding UK-Kuwait relationship and the importance of strategic communication during times of conflict.
Speaking at a breakfast gathering that brought together representatives of Kuwait’s print, television, radio and digital media, Rasheed thanked journalists and content creators for their work, describing the media’s role as important as that of diplomats working on political, economic, business and defence relations.
He also highlighted the importance of storytelling in reflecting Kuwait’s history, culture, food, sports and wider social life, saying the changing media landscape had made how information is communicated as important as the information itself.
Referring to the historical ties between the two countries, Rasheed said Britain had maintained a presence in Kuwait since 1899 and had supported the country through major historical events, including the 1990 Iraqi invasion and the subsequent liberation.
“Britain is no longer the protector of Kuwait. It’s Kuwait that is the protector of Kuwait,” he said, adding that the UK’s role was to help Kuwait protect itself through military capabilities, personnel and expertise.
The ambassador also stressed the importance of strategic communication during conflict, saying it was essential for countries to demonstrate unity and resilience. He said he had made efforts to remain visible in Kuwait during the recent conflict to reassure people that Britain remained committed to the country and trusted the Kuwaiti Armed Forces’ efforts to maintain security.
The gathering also featured a photographic exhibition showcasing the UK-Kuwait defence partnership through the years, with images tracing the relationship from the early 20th century to the present day.
Rasheed welcomed both longstanding and new contacts from Kuwait’s media community and expressed hope for continued cooperation.
