Kuwait keeps pace with latest scientific advancements in emergency medicine
Health Minister Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19:  Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi affirmed the Ministry's commitment to staying up-to-date with the latest scientific advancements, emphasizing the importance of utilizing advanced technology in the field of medical emergencies. This, he noted, contributes to achieving an integrated and comprehensive healthcare system.

In his opening speech at the Third Conference of the Council of Emergency Medicine Departments, Dr. Al-Awadhi stated that the conference serves as a scientific platform to review key challenges and discuss innovative solutions for the development of this crucial sector. He highlighted that the conference represents a milestone in the enhancement of both medical and academic services in emergency medicine.

Dr. Al-Awadhi explained that hosting the conference reflects the Ministry's ongoing commitment to developing this vital specialty within the healthcare system. The goal, he said, is to offer the best treatment options and continuous training for medical personnel to ensure the highest levels of efficiency in delivering emergency medical care.

He further emphasized that the emergency sector is a fundamental pillar of the healthcare system, as it is on the front lines, addressing critical cases and providing life-saving care. Dr. Al-Awadhi noted that the emergency medicine specialty has seen significant advancements since the launch of its program in October 2010 under the Kuwait Institute for Medical Specializations, incorporating more precise specialties associated with it.

According to Dr. Al-Awadhi, general emergency departments in Kuwait receive approximately 2.5 million patients and visitors annually. This highlights the importance of conferences like this, which bring together experts and specialists to discuss the latest scientific developments, address challenges, and create a roadmap for the continued improvement of this vital field.

Dr. Munira Al-Asfour, the head of the conference organizing committee, also addressed the audience, stating that emergency medicine has undergone a radical transformation in recent years. It is no longer simply a response to emergencies but has become a cornerstone of global health systems, supported by specialized academic programs, cutting-edge clinical research, and modern technologies that enhance the efficiency of healthcare services.

Dr. Al-Asfour added that the specialty of emergency medicine now encompasses several sub-disciplines, including immediate care, injury and accident management, crisis and disaster response, as well as toxicology, pediatric emergencies, wildlife emergency medicine, and other related fields.

She explained that the conference's comprehensive scientific program spans over 30 hours, aimed at providing emergency care providers with the scientific foundations, best practices, and latest developments in emergency medicine. This, she said, will enhance skills and improve services in healthcare facilities.

Dr. Al-Asfour also highlighted that the Emergency Medicine Program has experienced significant growth, with demand for its seats increasing more than tenfold since its inception. This growth, she noted, will help address the long-term shortage of emergency physicians with specialized certification.
