MANAMA, Jan 20: Kuwait stands at a pivotal juncture as it faces its Iraq at 3:00 pm. This match is part of the final round of the second group in the "main" round of the 21st Asian Handball Championship, also serving as the "2025 World Cup Qualifiers." The event is currently taking place in the Bahraini capital, Manama.
Kuwait currently holds the second position in the group with two points earned from a recent draw with Bahrain and South Korea. This places it behind the Bahrain leading the group with 3 points and ahead of the Korean team, sharing the balance with "two points" and a goal difference advantage for Kuwait. Meanwhile, the Iraqi team is in fourth place with one point.
The significance of today's match against Iraq lies in its potential to secure Al-Azraq’s qualification for the World Cup after a 15-year absence. The last participation of Kuwait in the World Cup dates back to 2009 in Croatia. A victory today would officially qualify Kuwait for the next World Cup and ensure advancement to the semi-finals of the Asian championship. In the event of a draw, qualification hinges on Bahrain winning against Korea in the match scheduled for 7:00 pm.
Today's matches also feature the UAE playing against Oman in a crucial encounter, and Qatar facing Japan at the top of the group. The top four qualifying teams will progress to the semi-finals of the 2025 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Croatia, Denmark, and Norway.
Expressing confidence in the team, Khaled Talib, Treasurer of the Handball Federation, highlighted the collective efforts to showcase the caliber of Kuwaiti handball on the international stage. Despite facing challenges since the inception of preparations for this stage, Talib emphasized pride in the players' determination and unity.
Talib urged Kuwaiti fans to rally behind Kuwait in this crucial match, expressing hope for victory, World Cup qualification, and a triumphant return to the Asian podiums.
