KUWAIT CITY, Dec 16: On the first anniversary of the passing of His Highness the late Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait and its people honor his memory with profound loyalty and gratitude. Known as the "Amir of Pardon," Sheikh Nawaf led the nation for three years with wisdom and dedication, striving to develop and stabilize the country while enhancing its status regionally and globally.

The late Amir’s memory, achievements, and virtues remain deeply ingrained in Kuwaiti history, serving as a beacon of inspiration for future generations. His leadership exemplified sacrifice and devotion, ensuring Kuwait’s pride, security, and progress.

Over nearly six decades of public service, Sheikh Nawaf left an indelible mark on every institution he led. He prioritized their development, prepared their cadres, and elevated their roles to enhance Kuwait’s standing on regional, Arab, and international stages.

On September 29, 2020, Sheikh Nawaf assumed power as Kuwait's 16th ruler, succeeding his brother, the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. His leadership was in accordance with the constitution and the Emirate Succession Law.

Born on June 25, 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the sixth son of the late Amir Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s 10th ruler, who served from 1921 to 1950. Sheikh Nawaf’s education in Kuwaiti schools, including Hamada, Sharq, and Al-Naqra, as well as the Eastern and Mubarakiya schools, was marked by his dedication to academic achievement and respect for educators.

Following Kuwait’s independence, Sheikh Nawaf began his political career. On February 12, 1962, he was appointed Governor of Hawalli by Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah. Later, on March 19, 1978, during the reign of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, he was named Minister of Interior. In this role, Sheikh Nawaf prioritized the country’s security and stability, introducing modern strategies and an integrated security system.

On January 26, 1988, Sheikh Nawaf became Minister of Defense, focusing on strengthening the military and equipping the Kuwaiti army with advanced technology. During the Iraqi invasion in 1990, he played a pivotal role in mobilizing military and civilian efforts to liberate Kuwait, ensuring the safety of the legitimate leadership and leading the resistance.

After Kuwait’s liberation in 1991, Sheikh Nawaf served as Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, beginning on April 20, 1991. He later became Deputy Chief of the National Guard on October 17, 1992, where he modernized its sectors and enhanced its capabilities.

On July 13, 2003, Sheikh Nawaf returned to the Ministry of Interior, and on October 16 of the same year, an Amiri decree appointed him First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. His tenure was marked by efforts to elevate internal security and improve the quality of security services through advanced technology and methods.

Sheikh Nawaf’s final role before becoming Amir was as Crown Prince, a position he held for 14 years. Appointed on February 7, 2006, by Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, his reputation for integrity, competence, and dedication made him an exemplary supporter of the Amir and a key decision-maker in Kuwait’s development and stability.
