KUWAIT CITY, April 14: The first phase of the landscaping and greening project for the Second Ring Road in the Shuwaikh residential area has officially launched, as announced by Sheikh Humoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the Ahmadi Governor and Chairman of the Green Urban Development Initiatives Committee. Spearheaded by Engineer Haifa Al-Muhanna, this initiative marks the beginning of a broader effort by the government to beautify and green Kuwait’s urban landscape.

In a statement to KUNA on Monday, following an inspection tour of the Second Ring Road, Sheikh Humoud confirmed that the project had received full approval from the Council of Ministers under Resolution No. (1634) and obtained all necessary permits from relevant government bodies.

Sustainable development at its core

Sheikh Humoud highlighted that the greening initiative aligns with Kuwait’s sustainable development goals and its broader future vision. The project is designed to encourage participation from individuals, companies, and cooperative societies to improve public spaces, including squares, main roads, and parks. Additionally, plans for the development of roundabouts, memorials, and murals along key highways are also part of the initiative.

He emphasized the importance of this project in contributing to the beautification of Kuwait’s urban environment, further stating that the Green Urban Development Initiatives Committee has set clear standards and procedures to ensure compliance with government regulations. The committee has already identified the key locations for the project, determined the necessary permits, and established forms for initiative submissions.

Call for public participation

Sheikh Humoud also encouraged potential contributors to submit their initiatives via the committee's official website (https://gudi.gov.kw) or its social media platforms (@gudikuwait on X and Instagram). He expressed his gratitude for the ongoing support from contributors like Engineer Haifa Al-Muhanna, along with various individuals, companies, and societies that have supported the initiative to enhance the beauty of Kuwait’s streets, parks, and public spaces.

A promising first step

Engineer Al-Muhanna, who is leading the project, revealed that the first phase would involve the planting of approximately 300 palm trees along the Second Ring Road. She explained that all necessary approvals and coordination with relevant authorities had been completed to ensure the smooth implementation of the landscaping work, in line with the approved plans.

"I want to express my gratitude to Sheikh Humoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah for his tireless efforts in overcoming the challenges we faced during the initiative’s progress," Al-Muhanna said. She also thanked the members of the Green Urban Development Initiatives Committee and the residents of the Shuwaikh area for their continued support.

Collaboration for a greener Kuwait

The Green Urban Development Initiatives Committee, established by Ministerial Resolution No. (56) of 2024, is chaired by Sheikh Humoud Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The committee includes key representatives from various government agencies, as well as from the private sector. These include the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources, the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, Kuwait University, the Ministry of Public Works, and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, among others.

This collaborative effort reflects Kuwait’s deep commitment to sustainable urban development and the ongoing efforts to improve the aesthetic and environmental quality of public spaces across the country.
