KUWAIT CITY, Jan 15: The Kuwait Winter Games Club has announced that 65 male and female athletes will represent Kuwait in five sports at the Asian Winter Games, set to take place in Harbin, China, from February 7 to 14. The event features competitions in 17 winter sports, highlighting Kuwait’s growing presence in the Asian Olympic movement.
During a press conference, the club’s honorary president, Sheikh Jaber Bandar Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, emphasized the significance of this record-breaking Kuwaiti participation and extended his gratitude to all supporters of the club.
Club President Fahid Al-Ajmi highlighted that Kuwait’s involvement in the tournament was made possible through coordination with the Kuwaiti Olympic Committee. The athletes will compete in five sports: ice hockey, figure skating, ice skating, speed skating, and curling. He described this as the largest Kuwaiti delegation in the history of the tournament, reinforcing Kuwait’s vital role in the Asian Winter Games, which will see participation from approximately 1,500 athletes representing 32 countries.
Al-Ajmi affirmed that the club has provided extensive resources to prepare the five teams for the event. He noted that the Kuwaiti ice hockey team will be the first to compete, with their opening match scheduled for February 3, followed by the curling team on February 4. The other events will follow the official opening ceremony.
The athletes have been undergoing intensive training at the club, with plans for external training camps in the coming weeks to optimize their readiness for the competition. These camps will be held in locations tailored to the specific needs of each sport.
Club Vice President Khaled Al-Mutairi inaugurated a ceremony to introduce the athletes. Players representing each sport entered the club’s hall, receiving enthusiastic support from their teammates across all age groups, symbolizing the spirit of unity and encouragement within the Kuwaiti delegation.
