KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27: Kuwait's stupendous victory against Bermuda by 5 wickets secured Super Six qualification in ICC 50 Overs Cricket World Cup Challenge League play-off, 2024. Stellar & swashbuckling performances from Sayed Monib (5 wickets) and Meet Bhavsar (101 runs) will be forever etched in history books as Kuwait continues its dream journey in the ICC Challenge League Play-off.
In a pivotal match between Kuwait and Bermuda at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval, Bangi, Malaysia, Kuwait led by skipper Aslam emerged triumphant, defeating Bermuda by 5 wickets and securing their spot in the Super Six phase.
Bermuda won the toss and opted to bat first, Bermuda posted a respectable and competitive total of 226 runs within their allocated 50 overs. Terryn Fray led the charge with an impressive 50 runs, closely followed by Derrick Brangman with 32 runs. Kuwait's pacer Sayed Monib delivered a stellar performance, claiming 5 wickets in his 10 overs, including a maiden. The consistent Yasin Patel also contributed with 2 wickets, while Ilyas and Shiraz secured 1 crucial wicket each.
Kuwait chased down the target of 226 runs, powered by an exceptional century from their opening batsman, Meet Bhavsar, who scored 101 runs off 131 balls. Yasin Patel contributed with an extremely gutsy innings of 22 runs, the experienced Mohammed Amin added classy 39 runs and had a match winning partnership of 87 runs with Meet whereas Bilal Tahir Khan smashed 25 runs with two towering sixes to chase the target of 227 in style with 5 wickets remaining.
Bermuda's bowlers managed to take 1 wicket each, but it wasn't enough to prevent Kuwait from securing victory. Meet Bhavsar was rightfully awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding century that played a pivotal role in Kuwait's victory, and Sayed Monib’s 5fer was right up there too in the context of the game.
With this crucial victory, Kuwait booked their most treasured spot in the Super Six phase alongside Italy and Bermuda from Group A, and Bahrain, Tanzania, and Vanuatu from Group B. The hosts Malaysia and team Saudi Arabia are out of the tournament.
The Super Six phase will now witness Group A (3 teams) take on Group B (3 teams) where all teams will get to play 3 matches. Kuwait will therefore play their 3 matches against Bahrain, Tanzania and Vanuatu respectively and the top 4 teams (based on points) at the end of the super 6 stage will qualify for the ICC Challenge League 50 overs World Cup Qualification.
Kuwait's impressive performance in this match and against Italy showcases their strength and determination to comeback from any stage of the tournament as they progress to the next super six phase leading all other 5 teams with 4 bonus points to their tally whilst all others will only carry 2 points each as per the playing conditions and tournament format.
