Kuwait Strengthens Charity Oversight to Protect National Reputation

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 16: All registered charitable societies and associations are being reviewed to ensure strict compliance with the laws and organizing decisions, while some are in the process of being dissolved. Sources told the newspaper that some charities were dissolved recently due to the violations they committed, while others were inactive and failed to perform their role – a confirmation that they are no longer needed. Sources warned that any charity or association, regardless of its name, will be dissolved if proven to have committed a violation because Kuwait’s reputation in this field is a red line and will not be tolerated under any justification. Minister of Social, Family, and Childhood Affairs Dr. Amthal Al-Huwailah had earlier issued four ministerial decisions to dissolve 15 charitable societies. After their dissolution, the funds of these charities will be transferred to the ministry, which will then determine the party for transferring the funds, sources revealed.

Al-Huwailah based these decisions, which were published in Kuwait Al- Youm, on the recommendations of the Committee for the Declaration, Evaluation, and Dissolution of Public Benefit Societies and Charities and in the interest of the public. Dissolution decision numbers 235, 236, 237 and 238 covered Badour Charity, Intellectual and Social Development, National Unity, Sheikh Faisal Al-Hamoud Al-Malik, Kuwaiti Public, Al-Sabil Charity, Manasik Al-Khair, Al-Manara Charity, Mubarak Abdul Aziz Al-Hasawi, Talib Al-Ilm (formerly Saleh Al-Abdali), Sorouh Charity, Dar Al-Tanmia Charity, Al-Ashraf Charity, Ajman Charity and Khair Kuwait Charity.
