KUWAIT CITY, March 18: Minister of Public Works and Acting Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy Dr. Noura Al-Mashaan emphasized the importance of addressing road defects and potholes in the coming weeks during a meeting with leaders of the Ministry of Public Works and the Roads Authority. She highlighted the need for a clear timetable to close all potholes and repair road damages, reaffirming the ministry’s commitment to accelerating repairs to ease the challenges faced by road users.
According to sources, the road maintenance contracts have a three-year timeline. However, the ministry is taking immediate action to address potholes and other damages before fully implementing the long-term repair program. This is part of the government's effort to alleviate road users' difficulties and enhance the overall quality of the country's infrastructure.
In addition to repairs, the Ministry of Public Works is working closely with the Ministry of Interior, through the General Traffic Department, to tackle traffic bottlenecks.
During the meeting, Minister Al-Mashaan also urged the opening of new work areas and roads, with plans to gradually increase the number of maintenance teams. This step is aimed at ensuring smooth progress on repairs without causing disruptions to traffic flow in key areas.
In a related move to enhance road safety, sources revealed that a new contract is underway to establish two weighbridges for controlling truck weights. One will be a fixed scale managed by the Public Authority for Road and Transportation, while the other will be a mobile scale deployed with traffic patrols. The mobile scale will allow authorities to issue fines for vehicles exceeding the permissible weight limit of 45 tons. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to safeguard road infrastructure and prevent further deterioration.
