Kuwait powers up as renewable energy projects valued at KD 1 billion
Kuwait to generate 5,700 MW of renewable energy with new projects, valued at 1 billion dinars.

KUWAIT CITY, Feb 19: Minister of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Boushahri announced that the estimated value of renewable energy projects in Kuwait is approximately one billion dinars. He said the implementation of each project takes between two to two and a half years. In a press statement issued after the inauguration of the 24th meeting of the Regional Council for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, which is being held for the first time in Kuwait, Dr. Boushahri highlighted two major projects. The first is being implemented in cooperation with China in Shaqaya (phases three and four) to generate 3,000 megawatts. The second is a renewable energy project in partnership with the Public Authority for Partnership Projects, with a capacity of 2,700 megawatts.

Within the next four years, the share of renewable energy in total energy production will increase to around 30 percent. Dr. Boushahri explained that the independent supplier projects could include renewable energy, particularly following the recent signing of a memorandum of understanding with private sector companies to supply energy to the ministry. These companies will generate electricity, which the ministry will then purchase from independent suppliers. Regarding the meeting, he said it focused on renewable energy, specifically the combination of traditional and renewable energies, aiming to account for 30 percent to 50 percent of total production. Dr. Boushahri stressed that he will discuss the efficient use of renewable energy in various sectors, including residential, private, investment, commercial, industrial, and agricultural, which would help reduce consumption and preserve this vital resource. He indicated that energy efficiency, combined with the use of clean energy, will contribute to carbon neutrality and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
