Kuwaiti Jailed for Two Years Over False News Post on Social Media

KUWAIT CITY, Mar 12: The Court of Appeal, presided over by Counselor Dr. Fahd Bouslaib, delivered a verdict on Tuesday sentencing Dr. (T.A.) to two years in prison. The charges stemmed from allegations of challenging the rights of the Amir and undermining the prestige of the state by disseminating false news on the social media platform (X) regarding political funds during the interrogation of former MP Muhalhal Al-Mudhaf by His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nawaf.

The Public Prosecution had charged the accused on November 27, 2023, at the State Security Department, with spreading a false and malicious rumor about Kuwait’s internal affairs on (X), a platform accessible to both domestic and international audiences. The prosecution argued that the post was likely to damage the state’s reputation, weaken its prestige, and harm national interests. Additionally, the accused was charged with publicly challenging the rights and authority of the Amir through the post published on the platform.

The court’s ruling underscores the seriousness of the charges, emphasizing the potential impact of such actions on the state’s integrity and national security.
