Kuwaiti Ministry of Health urges vaccinations for Umrah pilgrims
Kuwait's Ministry of Health advises neisseria meningitis vaccine for Umrah pilgrims before travel.

KUWAIT CITY, March 25: The Ministry of Health has issued a call to all citizens and residents planning to travel to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for Umrah or to visit holy sites to receive the quadrivalent meningitis vaccine (Neisseria meningitidis) before their departure. This comes per the health guidelines and recommendations from Saudi health authorities.

The vaccine is required for all Umrah pilgrims aged two years and older, with particular emphasis on those with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. The Ministry recommends travelers receive the vaccine at least 10 days before their journey to ensure adequate protection.

The vaccine is available at preventive health centers and approved vaccination sites across various health regions. Additionally, the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia has updated its health requirements for Umrah pilgrims and visitors to the Prophet's Mosque for the year 1446 AH (2025 AD), with a focus on preventing infectious diseases and safeguarding public health.

The updated guidelines, published by Al-Anbaa, include an expanded list of mandatory vaccinations and preventive measures, based on regional and global health risk assessments.

Mandatory vaccinations:

Meningococcal (Neisseria meningitidis) Vaccine Required for all Umrah pilgrims aged two years and older.

The quadrivalent vaccine (ACYWX) must be administered no less than 10 days and no more than 5 years before arrival in Saudi Arabia.

Polio vaccine

Mandatory for travelers from countries experiencing ongoing polio outbreaks or areas where vaccine-induced polio cases have been reported.

A vaccination certificate for at least one dose of OPV or IPV must be presented, taken within 12 months and no more than 4 weeks before arrival.

Yellow fever vaccine

Required for travelers arriving from countries or regions identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as endemic for yellow fever.

A valid international vaccination certificate must be provided.

Recommended vaccinations:

COVID-19 Vaccine: Recommended for all travelers.

Seasonal influenza vaccine.

Polio vaccine for children from certain endemic countries.

Preventive measures at Saudi Ports of Entry:

Travelers must present an approved vaccination certificate and undergo screening at entry points.

Educational brochures on infectious diseases will be distributed.

There will be an emphasis on vaccination against polio and meningitis before entry.

General health advice:

Wash hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.

Use tissues and dispose of them safely.

Avoid contact with sick individuals or those showing respiratory symptoms.

Drink clean water and consume well-cooked food.

Prevent sunstroke and heat exhaustion by wearing light clothing and drinking plenty of water.

Responding to Health Emergencies:

The Saudi Ministry of Health confirmed that in the event of a global health emergency, appropriate measures will be taken in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO) to protect public health.
