Kuwaiti women’s housing rights strengthened with new amendments
Public Authority for Housing Welfare

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 18: In a significant move to enhance the rights of Kuwaiti women, the Board of Directors of the Public Authority for Housing Welfare, chaired by Minister Abdul Latif Al-Mishari, has approved amendments to housing regulations. These changes aim to secure the rights of Kuwaiti women from the time housing plots are distributed until construction is completed.

Sheikha Bibi Al-Yousef, head of the Women’s Housing Affairs Team, emphasized that the amendments prioritize the interests of female citizens. She told Al-Qabas: "The changes ensure that eligibility for housing alternatives remains unaffected by family status changes, such as marriage, divorce, or death, after the distribution draw."

Al-Yousef explained that the revisions also guarantee the inclusion of Kuwaiti women’s names on housing unit documents immediately after the draw, reinforcing their legal rights. She stressed the need to continually review laws and regulations that fail to uphold justice for Kuwaiti women.

"The primary goal is to provide a dignified and stable life for Kuwaiti women, especially those who are unmarried, divorced, or widowed without children," Al-Yousef said. She added that ensuring timely access to housing is her top priority.

To address public concerns, Al-Yousef announced biweekly meetings to hear citizens' complaints and suggestions. Dedicated communication channels, including a hotline and WhatsApp, have been established to facilitate direct interaction with the housing authority.

In another development, Al-Yousef revealed that the Council of Ministers directed collaboration last August between the Housing Authority, Kuwait Municipality, the Fire Department, the Ministry of Electricity, and the Ministry of Social Affairs to monitor violations. The first joint effort involved inspecting the Sabah Al-Salem residential complex.

Reports from the Municipality highlighted encroachments on state property, while the Fire Department identified safety violations. Following these findings, the teams coordinated efforts to remove the violations. Al-Yousef commended the residents for their cooperation in resolving these issues and ensuring compliance with regulations.

These steps reflect a continued commitment to safeguarding women’s housing rights and addressing violations to uphold the integrity of Kuwait’s housing system.
