Kuwait's street lighting upgrade: New project aims for 50-60% energy reduction

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 23: The Ministry of Electricity, Water, and Renewable Energy has announced a significant project aimed at enhancing the lighting network along Arabian Gulf Street. Eng. Ayman Al-Omani, the Director of the Street Lighting Department, revealed the initiative during a press conference held this morning.

The project will introduce decorative poles and is part of a comprehensive ten-year plan designed to reduce energy consumption by approximately 50 to 60% while promoting environmental sustainability. Al-Omani emphasized that the objective is not only to beautify Arabian Gulf Street but also to adhere to the latest technical specifications by installing energy-saving LED spotlights.

With a contract value of 2 million and 466 thousand dinars, the project is set to span 24 months, commencing from the first work order issued on May 12, 2023. Although the implementation faced some challenges during the infrastructure phase involving other state agencies, these issues were successfully resolved, allowing the infrastructure work to be completed within the first year.

The installation of the first set of decorative poles began on October 20, 2024, opposite the Ministry of Oil. According to Al-Omani, the project is on track, and the replacement and operation of the entire lighting network are expected to be completed within just one year.

The designs of the poles, which reflect Kuwait’s heritage, culture, and national identity, were crafted by local engineers from the Street Lighting Department. The decorative columns are being manufactured by a local factory, having passed all necessary tests to meet the specifications set by the Ministry.

Al-Omani also outlined future projects for the Street Lighting Department, including six maintenance contracts across all governorates in Kuwait. Additionally, contracts for installing street lighting in poorly lit areas and for replacing sodium spotlights with energy-efficient LED lights are in progress, all aimed at significantly reducing energy consumption.

Joint initiatives with other government agencies, such as the Public Institution for Housing Welfare, are also underway. The Street Lighting Department has designed and approved lighting networks in new housing cities, which include decorative poles and energy-efficient LED spotlights. Current projects encompass South Abdullah Al-Mubarak, West Abdullah Al-Mubarak, Al-Mutlaa, and Southern Khaitan, with plans to design and approve lighting networks in other developments, including South Sabah Al-Ahmad and East Sabah Al-Ahmad.
