LANSING, Michigan, Oct 29, (Agencies): A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Lansing, Michigan, when a 2-year-old boy tragically lost his life due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The unfortunate event occurred when the child was inadvertently left unattended inside a car containing an unsecured firearm.

"The Lansing Police Department mourns the loss of the 2-year-old who has succumbed to his injuries," expressed Jordan Gulkis, a spokesperson for the Lansing Police Department.

In response to this devastating incident, Ingham County Prosecutor John J. Dewane stated on Thursday night, pledging to thoroughly review the case for potential criminal charges. He stressed the importance of preventing children from accessing firearms, emphasizing, "No child should have access to a handgun, period. However, due to the widespread proliferation of firearms, guns are all too readily available for children to encounter."

The tragic accident unfolded outside a Sunoco gas station in Lansing, Michigan, shortly after 3 pm on a Tuesday. In the wake of the incident, a 44-year-old male reportedly fled the scene but was later apprehended in connection with the case, according to Gulkis. The suspect's identity remains undisclosed until his arraignment, and Scott Hughes, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office, has indicated that charges will not be filed until at least the weekend.

Following the shooting, firefighters swiftly transported the toddler to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Regrettably, despite their best efforts, the young child could not overcome the grievous gunshot wound, and he passed away on Wednesday night. The child's name is being withheld due to his tender age.
