China Customs seizes 100+ live snakes smuggled in trousers.

CHINA, July 10: Customs officials in China intercepted a man attempting to smuggle more than 100 live snakes into mainland China by concealing them in his trousers, according to a statement from China Customs.

The incident unfolded at the border crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen when the unnamed traveler passed through the "nothing to declare" gate, officials reported. Upon closer inspection, customs officers discovered 104 live snakes packed into "six canvas drawstring bags" concealed within the man's trousers.

"The bags contained a variety of live snakes, each displaying different shapes, sizes, and colors," the statement from China Customs detailed.

Video footage released by Chinese customs depicted officers examining transparent plastic bags filled with live snakes, including red, pink, and white varieties. Despite their small size, the sheer number and nature of the reptiles presented a significant challenge to conceal within clothing.

China Customs emphasized the strict biosecurity and disease control laws that prohibit the unauthorized importation of non-native species into the country. "Those found violating these regulations will face legal consequences," the authority affirmed, though specific penalties for the individual were not disclosed.

This incident mirrors a similar attempt in 2023 at the same crossing point, where a woman was apprehended for smuggling five snakes hidden inside her bra. China, a key hub in the global animal trafficking trade, has ramped up efforts to combat illicit wildlife smuggling in recent years.

Authorities continue to tighten controls and enforcement measures to curb the illicit trade, underscoring ongoing efforts to protect biodiversity and prevent the introduction of invasive species into local ecosystems.
