Man dies in freak frozen hamburger accident: 'Hard to accept'

LONDON, Sept 23: British officials have recently uncovered the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of 57-year-old Barry Griffiths, a resident of Llandrindod Wells. According to a report by the Western Telegraph, Griffiths died in June 2023 after accidentally stabbing himself while attempting to separate frozen burgers.

The findings were announced during a coroner's court hearing on Monday, where Coroner Patricia Morgan detailed the events leading to Griffiths' death. He had been using a knife to separate the frozen burgers when he accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach. Morgan noted that Griffiths had reduced mobility in one of his arms due to a previous stroke, which likely contributed to the accident.

Tragically, Griffiths’ body remained in his apartment for several days following his death. Morgan explained that he led a relatively private life with limited social contact, which delayed a wellness check by police. His body was discovered in his bed on July 4, 2023, with reports indicating that his phone had last been active on June 23 and his laptop had been used on June 24.

In addition to the stabbing, Griffiths suffered from atherosclerosis, a condition that clogs arteries with plaque and restricts blood flow to the heart, further complicating his health situation.

Initially, authorities were concerned that his death might have been a suicide or a homicide. However, Deputy Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees later confirmed that the cause of death was determined to be an accident involving Griffiths alone. He explained that the bottom drawer of the freezer had been left open and pulled forward, indicating that Griffiths had been trying to access food items.

Rees detailed the scene, stating, “On the work surface in the kitchen adjacent to the fridge freezer were two uncooked burgers, a knife, and a tea towel.” He hypothesized that Griffiths was attempting to separate the frozen burgers when the accident occurred.

During the hearing, Coroner Morgan addressed Griffiths' family, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the evidence presented. She expressed her condolences and appreciation for their patience throughout the investigation.
