NEW YORK, Jan 3: On Monday night at Salt Lake City International Airport, a tragic incident unfolded as a man was discovered deceased inside an airplane engine. The Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) revealed that 30-year-old Kyler Efinger, a resident of Park City, breached an emergency exit door, proceeded onto the tarmac, and entered the jet's engine.
Efinger was found unconscious in the engine, mounted to the wing of a commercial aircraft that was loaded with passengers. Despite the engine's rotation at the time, the cause of Efinger's death remains unclear. The aircraft was situated on a de-icing pad when the unsettling discovery was made.
The incident was initially reported when the manager of a store within the airport witnessed a disturbance just before 10 pm. The manager informed airport control center dispatchers that a man had passed through the emergency exit. Moments later, personal items, including shoes and clothing, were found on one of the airport's runways, as detailed in a statement by the police.
Within less than 15 minutes of the initial sighting, SLCPD, along with airport staff, retrieved Efinger from the engine intake cowling, responsible for directing airflow to the engine fan section. Despite immediate CPR efforts, Efinger succumbed to the situation.
In response to the incident, passengers were evacuated from the affected plane, en route from Salt Lake City to San Francisco. However, overall airport operations remained unaffected. The preliminary investigation suggests that Efinger gained access to the airport's ramp area through the emergency exit, eventually entering the nearby engine.
The airport spokesperson informed The Guardian that further details will not be released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation
