NEW DELHI, India, Jan 28: In a recent development, the Delhi Police successfully arrested a 25-year-old man, identified as Jay Krishan Kumar Mehta, for allegedly making a hoax bomb threat call that targeted a SpiceJet flight en route from Darbhanga, Bihar, to the national capital. The arrest follows an incident on January 24, just two days before Republic Day.
According to official reports, Mehta, a resident of Bihar's Supaul district, made the false bomb threat call in an attempt to delay the flight's departure. His motive was reportedly rooted in his late arrival at Darbhanga airport, where he was subsequently denied boarding by the airline.
The police became aware of the situation when they received a call at the IGI airport police station around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. The CISF Control Room informed them that SpiceJet's Security Manager had reported receiving a call at their Gurugram call center from an individual named "Kishore." This person claimed to have overheard two boys discussing a bomb on a Delhi-bound SpiceJet flight.
Responding to the gravity and sensitivity of the situation, Delhi Airport was placed on high alert, and a "full emergency" was declared. The flight landed safely at Delhi airport, after which it was moved to an isolated bay for a thorough security search. Although the bomb threat call proved to be a hoax, it had caused panic among passengers.
After extensive verification, the case was transferred to the Udyog Vihar police station in Gurugram, where a formal case was registered. Technical surveillance efforts were made to trace the hoax caller, but initially, there were not enough clues.
During the investigation, details of the hoax caller's number were obtained from SpiceJet, and further scrutiny of flight records revealed that Jay Kumar was a passenger who missed the flight at Darbhanga Airport. Utilizing technical surveillance and manual intelligence, the suspect was traced to Noida and subsequently apprehended.
Upon interrogation, Mehta confessed to intentionally making the hoax call to delay the flight due to his tardiness at the Darbhanga Airport departure counter. He disclosed his educational background and current employment in a BPO company during the investigation.
