Meta shifts AI-edited image labeling to hidden menu on Facebook

NEW YORK, Sept 15: Starting this week, Meta will change how it labels AI-edited images on Facebook. The company will no longer provide a prominent label indicating that an image has been edited with AI tools. Instead, users will need to tap the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of a Facebook post and scroll down to find "AI Info" to see if the image has been modified with AI.

Images created using AI tools will continue to have an "AI Info" label visible directly on the post. Clicking on this label will display a note indicating whether the label is due to industry-shared signals or self-disclosure about AI generation. Earlier this year, Meta began applying AI-generated content labels more broadly to various media types, including videos, audio, and images. However, after receiving complaints from photographers about incorrect labeling of non-AI-generated content, Meta revised the "Made with AI" label to "AI Info" by July.

Meta stated that it collaborated with industry partners to refine its labeling process and that these updates aim to "better reflect the extent of AI used in the content." Despite these changes, the widespread use of doctored images to spread misinformation could make it more challenging to identify false news, especially during election seasons.
