Ministry of Commerce assures food security amid regional developments

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 25: The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced on Wednesday that the local production capacity of bakeries in Kuwait exceeds the total demand from residents. Undersecretary Ziad Al-Najem stated that current bakeries are equipped with electric generators and storage silos, allowing them to operate independently for extended periods without external supplies.

This announcement followed a committee meeting focused on assessing the readiness of the country’s food security emergency plans. The meeting aimed to evaluate the preparedness of relevant authorities in light of ongoing regional and global developments.

Al-Najem emphasized the readiness of the authorities and the measures implemented to maintain the safety of the country’s strategic food stock throughout September. He reassured citizens and residents about the availability of basic food commodities at their highest levels, including rice, sugar, baby milk, powdered milk, liquid milk, corn oil, frozen chicken, wheat, corn, barley, and crude oil.

The committee confirmed the stability of the strategic stock of these essential commodities and discussed the items in the emergency plan for September. Al-Najem noted that the Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company, along with its affiliates, has successfully doubled its storage capacity and increased the strategic food stock by an amount sufficient for an additional two months, in contrast to the private sector stock. He also announced that additional shipments of food supplies are expected to arrive soon.

In addition, Al-Najem highlighted that the committee deliberated on precautionary measures for exceptional cases, including decisions to fix the selling prices of certain consumer goods, regulate sales in central markets, and prevent the export of food materials and commodities outside the country. He reiterated that emergency teams are prepared to monitor prices at supply centers, with ongoing coordination between the Ministry and the warehouses of the Kuwait Supply Company across all 92 supply branches.

The committee meeting coincides with escalating regional political crises and military developments, following the directives of the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Khalifa Al-Ajeel.
