MoI rolls out 252 AI-powered traffic cameras to monitor violations

KUWAIT CITY, Nov 17: Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bu Hassan, Assistant Director of the Traffic Awareness Department, announced the activation of several traffic cameras using artificial intelligence to monitor seat belts and mobile phone violations. He explained that these cameras are operational immediately upon installation.

In an interview with Al-Akhbar channel, Bu Hassan confirmed that several cameras are already in operation, tracking violations related to seat belts and mobile phones. A total of 252 cameras will be installed across Kuwait.

He clarified that the new cameras not only monitor speed but also calculate the distance and speed between points. "Reducing speed between two cameras does not protect the driver from a violation, as the Point-to-Point camera calculates the distance and speed between cameras," he explained.

Bu Hassan also highlighted an increase in fines under the new traffic law, noting that the fine for a child sitting in the front seat will rise from 5 dinars to 50 dinars.

He emphasized that 92% of traffic accidents leading to injuries and fatalities are caused by inattention while driving.
