NEW YORK, Jan 27: A Florida father is facing charges after allegedly running over and killing his eight-month-old child, whom he reportedly placed in the middle of a busy intersection.
Justin Golden, 20, was driving at the intersection of Lenox and McDuff avenues in Jacksonville around 11 a.m. on Saturday when an argument reportedly broke out between him and a passenger, believed to be the child’s mother, according to News 4 Jax.
"The driver stopped the vehicle at the intersection, opened the door, and placed the child on the ground," said the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. "The driver then began to leave the area, and the vehicle struck the child."
After striking the baby, Golden allegedly continued fleeing the scene, but officers were able to quickly locate and arrest him.
Paramedics rushed the infant to the hospital, but the child was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Markin Barnes, a father of twins, witnessed the tragedy from his nearby barbershop. He heard a woman screaming and rushed outside to help.
"The kid was bleeding, so we immediately asked, 'Did she need help?'" Barnes recalled, noting that by the time he reached the scene, the driver had already fled.
Barnes described the haunting image of the woman holding the bleeding child, saying, “Now that I’m finding out the details, it’s even worse. Just the screaming, the people consoling her, you could tell it really was tragic. Especially with a kid being that young. It hits home - anything dealing with the kids and you, we take very seriously."
The Jacksonville Police Department is continuing its investigation, and authorities have not clarified whether Golden intentionally ran over the child.
"We, with our partners at the State Attorneys' Office, will stop at nothing to get justice for the baby," the sheriff's office stated.
Golden now faces charges of aggravated manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and failing to render aid. He is being held at Duval County Jail without bond.
