KUWAIT CITY, Jan 27: The Embassy of Myanmar on Monday celebrated the 77th Independence Day of the country in the presence of Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Sameh Jawhar, a group of ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions. Ambassador of Myanmar to Kuwait U Chan Aye said “Myanmar and Kuwait established diplomatic relations in 1998 and we opened our embassy here in Kuwait in 2009. The two countries share almost similar views on international issues of mutual interest.” He pointed out that the five principles of peaceful coexistence; such as respect for sovereignty, non-aggression, non-interference, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence, which were put forward by the joint initiative of China and India in 1954, remain one of the cornerstones of Myanmar’s foreign policy.
He added “during my tenure as the country’s representative in Kuwait, I will continue to communicate constructively with my counterparts from the Kuwaiti side to enhance our existing good relations to reach greater horizons for mutual benefit.” He expressed his sincere gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Government of Kuwait and the Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support and assistance for the diplomatic mission to carry out diplomatic duties smoothly in Kuwait. On the occasion, he stated “our Independence Day falls on Jan 4 -- three weeks ago. We gained our independence from Britain in 1948. Since then, successive governments in Myanmar have pursued an ‘independent and non-aligned foreign policy’ and maintained friendly relations with all countries near and far.”
