New evening circuits established to tackle appeal backlog

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 8: In a bid to tackle the significant backlog of appeals pending before the Court of Cassation, President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Counselor Dr. Adel Bouresli, announced yesterday the establishment of 10 new judicial circuits. These circuits will convene in the evenings to specifically address appeals that date back to before 2020. The new circuits are set to commence operations on November 1.

Informed sources revealed to Al Jarida that Bouresli is also expected to issue a decision soon to establish two additional departments aimed at examining appeals, with the goal of alleviating the accumulation of cases in the court. The morning departments will continue to adjudicate the appeals presented to them.

The Court of Cassation has expressed concerns over the limited number of advisors available to handle the adjudication of cases, indicating a need for an increase in the number of judges to meet the court’s future operational demands.

This initiative to address the backlog follows the recording of nearly 70,000 accumulated appeals last year, primarily in commercial and administrative cases. The judiciary's actions are seen as necessary steps to manage and reduce these pending appeals effectively.
