Call to curb narcotics spread in prisons

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 4: As a dangerous indication of the suspicious increase in the spread of the drug scourge in the country and the increase in the number of drug users, security sources revealed that the Drug Control General Department (DCGD) receives about 120 drug users weekly, a quarter of who are girls, at a daily rate ranging between 10 and 15 people, which is higher during the weekends. They explained that the users of narcotic and intoxicating substances such as Larica, Shabu (crystal meth), hashish or liquors, are referred to the court for necessary measures.

With a recent spread of drugs among users, DCGD has been making every effort to confront this destructive scourge. It has been able to seize major drug dealers and thwart the entry of large quantities of drugs through the border, land and sea ports. The department does not receive any injured abuser, even if his injury is a simple wound, as he could have injured himself with the intention of accusing the Ministry of Interior of physically harming him.

Any injured abuser is first treated in the hospital and then received by the department to refer him to the concerned authority where necessary measures are taken. There is a high number of girls using narcotic substances such as Larica, hashish and Chemical.

There are complete files of drug users with the department under security supervision. Majority of the drug users who were released from the Central Prison relapsed due to the availability of drugs inside the prison, according to what they confirm. There are drug dealers inside the Central Prison who run their “dirty” operations in drug peddling while behind bars. They communicate with drug users and their customers, place drugs in certain places and deliver the money in specific places.

The sources said, “We often wonder about the availability of narcotics inside the correctional institutions, as it is one of their responsibilities to take care of the inmates and prevent the entry of any prohibited items. The presence of the inmates inside these institutions is aimed for reform, and not destruction. They are people in the community who became good through rehabilitation and prevention of access to these drugs, as the presence of drugs is destructive to the community in the event they leave the prison after completing or rather serving their sentences”.

They stressed the need to intensify supervision and inspection of all those who enter correctional institutions and smuggle contraband, inspect restaurant orders that come from outside, and take stricter measures and use advanced devices to prevent the entry of these “deadly toxins”.
