Public authority for food and nutrition

KUWAIT CITY, Sept 4: The Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) announced on Wednesday the implementation of a new regulation for school canteens under Ministerial Resolution No. (5) of 2021. This regulation is designed to promote public health and reduce obesity among students, emphasizing PAFN's commitment to providing a safe and healthy food environment in both public and private schools across Kuwait.

Dr. Shaima Al-Asfour, Deputy Director General of the Community Nutrition Affairs Sector at PAFN, informed Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that the regulation allows only specific food items that meet the healthy nutrition requirements for children and adolescents. It also bans certain foods that contribute to weight gain or may harm students' health.

The approved food items are aligned with sound school nutrition standards, ensuring they include all essential food groups, are fortified with vitamins and minerals, and are low in sugar and salt. The banned items include foods containing eggs, mayonnaise, processed meats, caffeinated drinks like coffee and energy drinks, soft drinks, foods with artificial dyes, and high-salt foods.

Dr. Al-Asfour also mentioned that 26 companies supplying school cafeterias have been approved after undergoing rigorous food and technical audits to ensure they provide healthy meals that meet the highest standards.

She emphasized the ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Education to monitor and inspect schools, ensuring compliance with the cafeteria regulations through a specialized team of nutritionists and food inspectors. This effort aims to safeguard students' health and well-being.

Dr. Al-Asfour further explained that PAFN is dedicated to continuously improving the quality of food provided in school cafeterias and ensuring that supplying companies maintain the highest food quality standards for the benefit of the students.

The Ministry of Education had previously underscored the importance of school administrations adhering to health regulations in school cafeterias. Permitted items include a selection of juices, dairy products, biscuits, fresh fruits, and vegetables, as well as pies, sandwiches, and dried fruits.
