UNITED STATES, Jan 20, (Agencies): Astrobotic, the manufacturing company, announced the conclusion of the American spacecraft Peregrine's mission following an unsuccessful lunar journey due to an emergency malfunction.
The company issued a statement on social media, confirming the anticipated loss of contact with Peregrine at 3:50 pm Eastern Time. Noting that the vehicle entered the Earth's atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean at 16:04, Astrobotic is awaiting official confirmation from the government.
Launched from Earth on January 8 aboard the Vulcan launch vehicle, the Peregrine probe was originally slated to land on the moon's surface on February 23. It carried five scientific vehicles for NASA, along with various research payloads and symbolic items like ash and DNA, despite objections from indigenous peoples in the United States.
The probe's issues surfaced shortly after launch, with Astrobotic reporting problems related to the spacecraft's propulsion system and fuel leakage. Subsequently, due to an emergency, the planned lunar landing was canceled. A week into its flight, the company made the decision to terminate the mission.
