MANILA, Philippines, Nov 9, (Agencies): In a significant move, Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has initiated the formation of a national committee dedicated to orchestrating the commemoration of the 650th anniversary of Philippine Muslim history and heritage. This announcement, made by his office on Thursday, underscores the commitment to acknowledging the crucial role played by the Muslim minority community in shaping the nation's identity.
According to historical records from the National Historical Institute, Islam first appeared in the Philippines in 1380, positioning it as "the oldest monotheistic religion" in this Southeast Asian nation. Muslims constitute approximately 6 percent of the Philippines' vast population of 110 million.
The commemorative efforts are set to span from the upcoming year until 2030, as outlined in an administrative order recently signed by President Marcos. The order emphasizes the pivotal objective of recognizing the substantial contributions of Muslim Filipinos to the rich tapestry of Philippine history and heritage.
The Presidential Communications Office, in a statement released on Thursday, highlighted the multifaceted goals of the commemoration. Beyond historical acknowledgment, it aims to catalyze local and national tourism, rekindle nationalism across all Filipinos, fortify social cohesion within the community, and amplify social awareness of cultural diversity.
Tasked with organizing and coordinating the various programs associated with the anniversary, the national steering committee will be chaired by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Additionally, the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos and the Bangsamoro Commission for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage will be vice-chaired the committee.
Amenah Pangandaman, a Muslim Filipina and secretary of the Department of Budget and Management, underscored the alignment of this project with President Marcos' overarching campaign for national unity. In a statement, she emphasized the initiative's broader message of showcasing the Philippines as a multicultural nation that thrives on pluralism, religious tolerance, and inclusivity.
Pangandaman expressed the significance of "650PH in 2030" as a testament to the true beauty of unity in diversity. She highlighted its reflective nature, illustrating how faith can bring people together, contribute value to human life, and serve as a fundamental principle for peace-building, echoing the core tenets of Islam.
