LONDON, Feb 20: A Polish woman who claims to be Madeleine McCann has been arrested just after arriving in the UK. Julia Wandelt, 23, was detained at Bristol Airport on suspicion of stalking and harassing Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. Wandelt, who had just flown in from Wroclaw, Poland, was about to meet a friend in Cardiff when police surrounded her in front of shocked passengers. The friend, believed to be in her 60s, was also arrested and taken away.
Wandelt, also known as Julia Wendell, has made headlines since February 2023 after she posted on Instagram under the account name '@IAmMadeleineMcCann', claiming to be the missing British girl. She appeared on the U.S. talk show Dr. Phil to discuss the possibility that she is Madeleine, who was abducted in 2007 at the age of three from her family's holiday villa in Praia de Luz, Portugal.
This week, Wandelt posted on a new social media account, '@AmIJuliaWandelt', where she shared the results of a recent DNA test that allegedly links her to Kate and Gerry McCann. She claimed that the couple refused to participate in the test. According to Wandelt, experts had compared the DNA results with evidence from the crime scene, and she believes they found matches for her eyes, teeth, and voice to those of the missing girl.
Wandelt’s representative, Surjit Singh Clair, confirmed the arrest at Bristol Airport, saying, "I'm trying to find out what's happened but it appears Julia has been arrested at Bristol Airport this evening just after she got off the plane. The police have reportedly arrested her on an allegation of stalking and harassing the McCanns."
In her social media posts, Wandelt suggested that the genetic evidence supports the idea that Gerry McCann could be her biological father. She shared the first part of her DNA results, which showed that she is "part British and part Irish," contradicting previous claims by private investigator Dr. Fia Johansson in 2023, who had said that Wandelt’s DNA results indicated she was fully Polish. Wandelt has disputed Johansson's findings, claiming the investigator was not truthful, a claim Johansson has denied.
In her recent posts, Wandelt presented a second set of DNA results analyzed by Dr. Monte Miller, a respected biochemist from Loma Linda University in California. Dr. Miller suggested that while Wandelt's DNA does not fully match the evidence from the crime scene, there are patterns that indicate a potential family connection.
Wandelt has previously spoken about her difficult childhood, including being sexually abused, and said this led her to believe she could be Madeleine McCann after seeing sketches of suspects that resembled her abuser. She claimed gaps in her memory and her parents’ dismissal of questions about her possible adoption contributed to her suspicions. However, her parents have denied these claims and provided evidence to refute them.
Wandelt’s claims and her arrest have drawn attention from both the public and authorities, as the mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann’s disappearance continues to captivate people worldwide.
